What Is a Biobank (BBM)?
A modern biobank is more than just a storage facility. It is a sophisticated system that connects clinical care with molecular biology.
Cryopreservation
Storage in liquid nitrogen at temperatures below −150°C ensures the long-term stability of DNA, RNA, and protein molecules.
Digital Pathology
High-resolution scanning of tissue specimens enables automated analysis, data sharing across institutions, and reproducible diagnostic results.
Clinical Annotations
A biological sample has little scientific value without associated data. Each donor is assigned an anonymized profile containing relevant clinical and treatment information.
History of the Infrastructure
Network Established
Five cancer biobanks joined forces to create a network for the collection, preservation, and provision of biological samples. In the same year, the BBMRI.cz research infrastructure was officially established.
European Integration
BBMRI.cz became a founding member of the pan-European BBMRI-ERIC research infrastructure. This enabled the Czech biobank network to fully participate in European collaboration on biomedical research and the harmonization of biobanking standards.
Consolidation and Further Development
The Czech Biobank Network project (LM2023033), funded by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, focuses on improving quality, advancing data digitalization, harmonizing processes, and strengthening international collaboration.
